A Contemporary Twist on an Age-Old Medium
Beads have long been worn as jewelry, but this spring at The Dairy Barn Arts Center, contemporary artists are shaking things up. Come see an assortment of beaded artworks, from fine jewelry to loom weaving to sculpture, at Bead International 2008, a biennial international juried exhibition on display from May 23 to September 1. There are 68 artworks on display, representing 53 artists from across the United States and beyond. Pieces range in style from the traditional to the whimsical as they incorporate a variety of colors and materials. This exhibition will spark your creativity and broaden your perspective, as it considers any pierced object to be a bead. Works range in size from very small to life size. Many of the works are available for purchase. Additionally, Ohio University Press, Athens, Ohio, will publish a full-color book documenting the complete Bead International 2008 and Beyond Basketry 2008 collections.

Weaving Together the Traditional and the Contemporary
Come see what happens when the age-old art form of basketry is combined with contemporary visions and techniques. Beyond Basketry 2008 will be on exhibition at The Dairy Barn Arts Center from May 23 to September 1. This national juried art exhibition features 67 works by 42 artists from across the United States and will challenge your ideas of what constitutes a basket. All artworks on display are vessels made of woven materials, but the pieces explore a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. Works range in size from 5.5 x 2 x 1 inches to 6.5 x 8 feet and are created from a vast array of materials. Many of the artworks will be available for purchase. Additionally, Ohio University Press, Athens, Ohio, will publish a full-color book documenting the complete Beyond Basketry 2008 and Bead International 2008 collections.

Bead International 2006 is available for tour between January - April 2008!!! Approximately 57 pieces are featured in this touring exhibition. The art works on tour range from small sculptures and jewelry to large two and three-dimensional works. Educational data regarding history and techniques of bead work accompany this exhibit as do gallery tags and other materials.
Bead International has been showcasing this beautiful art form since 1998 and the 2006 exhibit is certainly among one of the best juried exhibitions of contemporary bead work.

This is primarily a three dimensional exhibition that requires approximately 2,000 square feet.
The standard rental fee allows for a four week exhibition, excluding the time required for installation and repackaging the collection. Display tags will and other data will be provided on disk. The rental fee does NOT include shipping costs. When a collection is moving only bet ween the Dairy Barn and a host site, the Borrower will pay the round-trip expenses for that distance. If a collection is moving from one host site to another, then the cost for the total touring circuit will be divided among the Borrowers.

Bead International 2006 is the fifth biennial, international, juried exhibition of contemporary artwork in which beads are a primary element. Approximately 85 works will be selected for display by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center, Athens, Ohio. Following its premier in Athens, selections from the exhibit will circulate as a touring exhibit from October 2006 through December 2008.
